Prayer Flags: An
On-Going Series of Painted Drawings
This sequence began as a visual response
to an open-ended question of whether the arts in education
transferred specific skills to the learner or, somehow,
transformed this participant. During this period, a
lecture given by the Dalai Lama reminded me of those
colorful banners rippling in the wind and transmitting
Buddhist teachings.
To express this tension of contrasting
themes, I chose warm and cool colors for the first strand. As
this installation continues, other thematic tensions
emerged such as the manufactured object versus the natural
world, and extroversion versus introspection. Photocopy
transfers of my drawings are painted with acrylics. This
technique allows and encourages an expressive line quality
in contrast with the painted surface. |
